The Soul Watcher: Honoring the Guardians of Our Faith

Who is watching over your soul? Beyond the noise of politics and the chaos of the "last days," God has provided spiritual leaders to guide us and a Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth. This week, we explore the vital importance of praying for our "Soul Watchers" and why our peace must remain rooted in the sovereignty of God, no matter who sits on an earthly throne.

“Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God.” — Hebrews 13:17 (NLT)

It is a beautiful thing to give honor and glory to our Heavenly Father, but the Bible also calls us to a specific kind of honor: the delight of honoring one another (Romans 12:10). Today, I want to shine a light on a group of people who carry a weight many of us will never fully see: our spiritual leaders—the "Soul Watchers."

The Weight of the Watchman

While driving recently, I found myself reflecting on the people God has used to lift me up. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for my Pastor. God has entrusted him with a sacred charge: the souls of the church.

Think about that responsibility. It is not a job; it is an account they must one day settle before God. As humans, we sometimes find it difficult to accept rebuke or correction, but we must remember that our leaders are fighting a battle on our behalf. They need our support, our grace, and most importantly, our fervent prayers. If we think our daily trials are hard, imagine the spiritual fight of someone responsible for the souls of an entire congregation.

Guidance from the Pit

There is a constant tug-of-war between the flesh and the spirit. I remember a moment in my life when I couldn’t see the cliff ahead, but God used my "Soul Watcher" to steer me back to safety. There is no greater joy for a leader than to see their children walking in the truth (3 John 1:4).

When we listen to those God has placed over us, we find the experience of David in Psalm 40:1-3: He brings us out of the "miry clay" and sets our feet upon a Rock. That Rock is Christ, and our leaders are the ones pointing us to Him.

Sovereignty Over the Storm

Many in the world today look to governments or social movements for direction, but we have a different North Star. Recently, our nation has been consumed by the noise of elections and political change. While names and titles in the world change, God’s will for your life does not.

Regardless of who sits in the earthly seat of power, God holds the heart of the king in His hand. Our duty as the Church remains the same:

Pray for Authority: We intercede for those in power (1 Timothy 2:1-2), not because we always agree, but because God commanded it.
Stand Like the Three: Like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, our confidence is in God. Even if the furnace is hot, we do not bow to the world’s statues (Daniel 3:17-18).
Remain Saturated: In these "last days," people will become ungrateful and unloving (2 Timothy 3:1-4). We must be the light that remains rooted and grounded in the Word.

A Firm Foundation

Let us hold on to Christ, our Solid Rock. Let us pray for our "Soul Watchers" so they may lead with joy and not with sorrow. As we move forward, let us lean not on our own understanding, but acknowledge Him in all our ways, knowing that He rules over the nations forever.
