“AND THEY’RE OFF!”: Running the Race with Endurance

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” — Acts 1:8 (NLT)

If you have ever watched the Kentucky Derby, you know the electric moment when the gates swing open and the announcer shouts, “And they’re off!” As the horses gallop down the track, the crowd watches with bated breath, hoping the one they’ve backed will cross the finish line first.

In that moment, the jockey doesn't know exactly how the race will end, but the expectation is clear: everyone who starts the race is expected to finish.

The Starting Gate of Salvation

In life, when we choose to believe and accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we follow the Plan of Salvation (Acts 2:38). This is our "starting gate." It is the beginning of a lifelong race that we must strive to finish well.

How do we ensure a great ending? We must keep our eyes on the prize. The Apostle Paul said, “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14). On this track, we cannot afford to compare our pace to the person running beside us. Instead, we must focus on Jesus and encourage our fellow believers to keep moving. As 1 Thessalonians 5:11 reminds us: “Encourage one another and build one another up.”

No Man Left Behind

After I completed my discipleship class, my teacher took me to lunch and shared a vital truth: the importance of an accountability partner. She emphasized that we need someone to help us stand firm on Biblical teachings. I’ll never forget her words: “No man left behind in this race.”

As Christians, we will encounter trials, moments of doubt, and spiritual "fatigue." Even the original disciples struggled. Jesus knew Peter would deny Him, Judas would betray Him, and Thomas would doubt Him. Yet, Jesus never gave up on them. He mentored them, taught them, and—most importantly—prayed for them.

He told Peter, “Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. But I have pleaded in prayer for you... strengthen your brothers” (Luke 22:31-32). Praying for one another is not just a nice gesture; it is essential for staying on course.

The Power to Finish

In Acts 1, Jesus spent forty days proving He was alive because He knew that human disbelief and fear would eventually creep in. He didn't leave His followers to run the race on their own strength. He promised them the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4), which allowed them to endure through every hardship.

Through the Holy Spirit, the Apostles moved from a place of fear to a place of power, revealing miracles, signs, and wonders. Jesus wants that same intimate relationship with us. He invites us into a life of study, fasting, and prayer.

The race is not given to the swift or the strong, but to those who endure to the end (Ecclesiastes 9:11). We are called to be soldiers in God's army, putting on the full armor and recognizing that our weapons are not carnal, but mighty through God for pulling down strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4).

Setting Our Sights

As we continue down the track, let the Word of God be the lamp that lights our path. Let us run to proclaim this Great Salvation to the ends of the earth. At the end of our lives, the only thing that will truly matter is that we fulfilled our God-given purpose and made Heaven our eternal destination.

Keep your sights set on the realities of Heaven, not the things of earth.
